Water update: Sierra Club urges residents to contact City Council and support amended plan

One day after five local organizations publicly reaffirmed support for the 2006 water supply plan, the Piedmont Group of the Sierra Club urged residents to call City Council and “encourage them to continue to seek amendments to the adopted water plan,” reads the ‘action alert.’

On September 20 City Council adopted an amended plan that includes maintenance dredging of the South Fork Rivanna River Reservoir and a phased build-up of the existing Ragged Mountain dam. Following updated cost estimates from Black & Veatch engineering firm, Mayor Dave Norris called the incremental construction a viable option. (Click here to read Norris’ statement.)

"The Sierra Club believes these amendments would provide key elements in a significantly improved water plan for our community. Albemarle County continues to resist amendments to the adopted plan," reads a statement from the Sierra Club. "We need to encourage Council to continue to support plan amendments that will lead us to a better water plan for our community."
