Live Arts made clear when managing director John Gibson announced his resignation that it would start 2010 with a pair of new leaders. In July, Satch Huizenga accepted the role of artistic and producing director. According to Live Arts, Huizenga will make his premiere alongside new executive director Matt Joslyn, a 33-year-old native of Columbus, Ohio. John Conover, chair of Live Arts' Board of Directors, says that Joslyn was selected from among a group of more than 40 applicants.

Joslyn worked previously as executive director of the State Theatre of Ithaca and director of education for the Columbus Children’s Theatre. He also served as executive director of Mansfield, Ohio’s Renaissance Theatre from May 2007 until January 2009, when he was let go “because of economic reasons,” according to Mansfield TV station WMFD. During recent visits to Charlottesville, Joslyn caught performances of Performance Exchange Project’s Our American Ann Sisters and Gibson’s production of Gypsy.

"It's great to be coming to a theater that can both do classics in an interesting way, and also take risks on brand new work that the community really gets behind," said Joslyn during a phone interview today.

As executive director, Joslyn will oversee budgeting and development for Live Arts. Asked how to steer a local theater during a time of economic distress, Joslyn responded, "You've got to be extremely relevant to your community. You have a not-for-profit status because you serve your community—that's why you exist and why you're tax exempt."

Huizenga, who spent time with Joslyn last weekend, offered some thoughts today on Joslyn's appointment and Live Arts' two-pronged leadership structure: "He'll be the person creating budgets and handling development and so forth—with my input. I'll be the guy working with directors and actors in the theatrical spaces—once again, with his input. It's got to be hand-in-glove, or it won't function properly."

Check back next week for more on Joslyn, Huizenga and Live Arts in 2010.

This is crazy!?? Does anyone know what the hell the board is thinking? First, they APPOINT Satch to the position of Artistic Director; to my knowledge there wasn't any search conducted - not locally, regionally or anything! Did they want to put someone in place they feel is beholden to their leadership?? OR is Satch the right guy for the job? We'll never know because there was no process behind any of this to validate that he is the best person for the position.

To me, this speaks volumes about the direction of Live Arts. As for the new appointment of the Managing Director.....this guy sounds like a real winner; he lost his last gig because the company couldn't sustain the staff positions??? WASN'T THAT HIS JOB? To manage the financials and fundraising?

I'd have to say the Board of Live Arts gets a big failing grade. And by my guess, you're going to see the place go further away from daring and interesting artistic works to more mainstream tedium.

Lets please have some heart and not sit on the side line any longer, these are our cultural insitutions and we can't let a few bad board members undermine the creative endevour of a generation of artists and community arts patrons and supporters.

Bad decision for this place to hire matt. They should check the track record of every theatre organization before during and after matt's involvement, before it's too late. And to the employees of live arts, start a cya file for yourselves
Been there done that January 5th 09:11pm
The conservative base has destroyed local arts to such an extent the only way back is to introduce a special sales tax on food and clothing and funnel it directly to institutions like Live Arts.

We also need to insist that our arts leaders like Joslyn are paid no more than 12-15K/year until we are back on our feet! Perhaps community food drives (canned goods etc.) to save a little more.
