Is Wednesday afternoon busier than Saturday night? It might be, thanks to the following announcements:

  • Kyle Woolard, who makes his own fuzzed-out grunge a la Mark Kozelek or Bob Pollard as Uncle Jemima, dropped by this morning with the new Lance Brenner-produced EP by The Astronomers. The band (which now features Woolard on guitar and vocals) releases the six-song EP, Think Fast, on Friday at Twisted Branch Tea Bazaar. Listening commences now, but will say that the band gives groups like Of Montreal and Green Jelly a run for their money in the provocative album art department. Well done, space cadets!

  • Who says "secrets, secrets are no fun"? On Sunday, November 15, a group dubbed Secretly Y'all plans to host a night of storytelling at Random Row Books (which I wrote about here). Part The Moth, part "This American Life," part late-night gabfest—ah, but the best part is that it's free of charge, and early (7pm). Details here, including the evening's first theme, "Touched by a Crazy."
  • After blogging the Republican Party party at Rivals last night, I made it to The Southern for A.A. Bondy's Springsteen-in-Nebraska folk and a few Ryan Adams-y space jams. Headliner Elvis Perkins in Dearland was sans band; the effect was like moving from the swampy soul of Leonard Cohen's Death of a Ladies Man to Songs from a Room as Perkins strapped on his acoustic for a solo set. He explained later that his band's vehicle smacked into a deer on the way to the gig, breaking both car and animal. Yes, there were jokes about Elvis Perkins in Deer Land...
