C-VILLE Weekly seeks a News Editor to join our team
Position Summary:
The News Editor manages content and production of C-VILLE news sections, including but not limited to Development, UVA & Government, as well as This Just In headline news blog, Odd Dominion and opinion pieces. This includes writing shorter news stories and cover pieces. Also includes thorough collaboration with Art Director.
Reports To: Editor in Chief
Supervises: Unspecified number of freelancers and interns; possibly staff writer
Essential Functions:
• Recruit & train freelance news writers and news interns
• Manage news budget
• Keep abreast of local news in all local media
• Keep abreast of trends and leading players in all areas of news coverage
• Develop and maintain ongoing list of story ideas
• Manage breaking news coverage both online and in print
• Connect with public and important local constituencies
• Manage weekly deadlines
• Produce weekly news articles and regular cover stories
• Lead by example and be ready to work before 9 a.m.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Previous News Writing Experience, preferably on a newspaper staff
• Bachelor’s Degree
• Proficient in basic programs: Word, email, InCopy
• Strong communication skills: oral and written
• Ability to excel in a smart, fast paced, work environment
• Must relish the written word
• Must think global, write local
