Tomorrow will find elementary school students in Greene and Albemarle receiving a civics lesson from Delegate Rob Bell. The Republican is scheduled to visit four elementary schools to discuss his role in the Virginia Legislature and how the legislature's activities affect students' daily lives.

No word on whether the presentations will include the word "lobbyist," nor whether cautious parents will be allowed to opt their children out of this potentially politicized educational experience.

The schedule: 8:30am at Ruckersville Elementary, 9:30am at Nathanael Greene Elementary in Stanardsville, 12:15pm at Broadus Wood Elementary in Earlysville, and 1:30pm at Baker Butler Elementary. Bell will also visit Jack Jouett Middle School at 2:30pm for a "Virginia Flag Presentation."

INDOCTRINATION!

Interesting news, but I would like to hear comment from school administration or school board given the absurd lengths they went to to allow an "opt-out" of our own President's words of encouragement to students. I dare say that I fear more a "civics" lesson than words of encouragement from any elected official, Democrat or Republican.

Rob's been doing this for years. It's all about how a bill becomes law. No (overt) politics. As a Democrat, I'm OK with it.

I think the comment that larryb would like to hear wouldn't so much be what school admin/board feel is wrong with Rob Bell, but rather to explain in hindsight what they felt was so wrong with the President addressing schoolchildren. they flipped out over Obama; Rob Bell is cool with them; explain that.

I think the problem here is how close it is to the fall election. I think its great that Delegate Bell is engaging students, and I thought it great that Obama gave a back to school speech, but with the November election a month away and Rob Bell running in a tight race, its hard not to see this as a bit of a political stunt.

The opt out was given because of the reaction of many parents. Our president spoke to the future voters ( a shrewd move), because that will gain political mileage in the future elections. Rob Bell, at least is overt about his reason for giving the kids civics lessons. They surely need it. Look at the hundreds of thousands who voted "anti-Bush" because they blame the president for the condition of the country. He is the EXECUTIVE branch. He doesn't make the laws, the SENATE AND THE HOUSE do. That's why the kids need civics lessons. Many of their parents never learned that basic tenet of government class. If you are unhappy with the state of the union, vote out our current senators and congressman and replace them. Starting with the majority who have been in leadership (sic) for the last THREE years. Reexamine your own conscience and see how often you are "out for yourself and who cares about the rest of the people". That is the attitude that got us into this handbasket to hell.
