UPDATE: The City of Charlottesville announced that parking at Market Street and Water Street parking garages will be free up until Christmas Eve. Happy shopping!

------------------------------

If driving on West Main Street has gotten easier, walking has, perhaps, gotten worse. At least before people could walk in soft snow without the danger of falling. Now, it’s all ice. Hard, slippery ice.

Just when the city announces that a sidewalk waiver is in effect on Tuesday, but normal code is in effect from today onward, C-VILLE took the camera and recorded the conditions on a primary road.

Today, both City Hall and the Albemarle County Offices will open two hours late. The Charlottesville Transit Service (CTS) reports that it will only operate the Free Trolley and Route 7 (to Fashion Square Mall) on a regular basis.

All other routes are canceled.

The intersection of Main and Ridge. Not much better than yesterday, is it?

West Main Street and Ridge Avenue intersection.

Traffic light...and a dangerously close-to-the-road pedestrian walkway.

South Street still buried in snow.

Water Street in front of the Federal Court House. Icy path in the snow.

The city can't get the roads clear, the sidewalks dont have to be cleaned, transit is shut down for days on end, and in trying to walk, one takes their live into their own hands. Best place in the country to live? no, this place is an embarrassment with how spectacularly they have failed to answer this storm. although I noticed that the public works parking lot did not have a spec of snow on it. hmm.

Looks like the c-ville weekly has the intersection of ridge and main street, at the end of the DTM from c-ville's offices, covered. Crack reporting that.

Not only is the public works parking lot clear, but just about EVERY grocery store and private enterprise has a clear parking lot. Can't the city/county pay private citizens with plows to plow the roads? Do they HAVE TO rely on their own vehicles?

C-ville weekly would do well to investigate why the city and county government failed so miserably in this storm. The entire citizenry knows that Albemarle and Charlottesville are the municipalities that performed the worst out of the entire state. The local media would be performing its journalistic function to find out why.

Reporting on the state of the sidewalk .25 miles from your office is phoning it in.

Yeah, socialism is great....

You hipsters at C-ville seem to be preoccupied with sidewalks. What was with the article a few weeks ago where you complained that the sidewalks in an unfinished development were unfinished. Are you going to next write that the rooms at the Landmark Hotel are not finished either and are really not as luxurious as you'd hoped?
Elisa Bridges December 23rd, 2009 03:27am
No one can argue that this entire town is a complete mess and performed miserably in the storm. I don't understand how high-traffic areas around town can still be an utter disaster.

@Dave - I didn't realize Old Man Winter was a socialist. Weird...

@Slide show - maybe C-VILLE would cover something other than the corner of West Main and Ridge if the impassible sidewalks and walkways allowed them to travel further. Sounds like your on to a solid story idea. Why don't you give free-lance writing a shot?

@Elisa - I'm pretty sure Old Man Winter is a hippy socialist working for C-VILLE and writing under the guise of "Chiara". Yeah, that's it! ITS A CONSPIRACY!
i love sidewalks December 23rd, 2009 09:57am
@ Elisa & Nice Slide Show

You must be Shiffletts living out in the hollers of Albemarle and not paying city taxes. As city residents, we are fined (beginning today) for not clearing our sidewalks. I think you're missing the point- We get fined and what does the city get? A pat on the back for getting our roads back. How can they put a fine into effect when they can't clear 1 city owned sidewalks and 2much less the roads.

@Elisa - keep developing, I hear Biscuit Run would like some sidewalks in the new park

@Slideshow- Ridge and Main happen to be one of the two largest intersections in the city, probably was her point
