Several hundred people gathered at UVA’s amphitheater last night for the Stand Against Hatred. The vigil and public forum was in response to the April 4 attack on a UVA student that was apparently motivated by anti-gay bias.

Addressing the crowd, Associate Vice President and Dean of Student Allen Groves said he’d received e-mails asking why an attack motivated by perceived sexual orientation should be considered differently than other assaults. “Any assault on a UVA student is one too many,” he began. Crimes of hate, however, “strike at the most cherished values of society. If I am assaulted solely because of who I am, then I come to fear I will never be safe, for how can I change who I am?”

Groves also read a letter of support written by the Seven Society, a secretive and influential philanthropic organization on Grounds, and drew cheers by condemning the “not gay” chant at UVA football games, which has been an unofficial and controversial tradition for years. Finally, he told of confronting his own parents’ racism as he exhorted the audience to “talk to people who don’t see things the same way. It’s a very small step between a derogatory slur and a brutal assault in the middle of the night.”

More after the picture.

Everyone has a place in UVA's rainbow. That was the message of yesterday's Stand Against Hatred rally in response to an apparent anti-gay assault two weeks ago.

Other speakers reiterated this message. Seth Kaye, president of Queer and Allied Activism, helped organize the event: “We hope that you call out hatred wherever you see it in your life. It’s not just enough to attend vigils like this.”

UVA has experienced intermittent racist and homophobic attacks and vandalism in recent years. Many student organizations and other support structures have arisen in response. One event, Proud to Be Out Week, strives to increase awareness and understanding around issues of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community at UVA, and it happened to coincide with the Stand Against Hatred. Edward Warwick, Coordinator of the LGBT Resource Center at UVA, noted after the vigil that “the attack on April 4th unfortunately provided a very real-life example of the unacceptable behavior Proud to Be Out Week tries to address. While faculty and staff members are still highly concerned about including gender and sexuality in our non-discrimination policy and securing domestic partner benefits, and students work diligently toward the establishment of a Queer Studies minor and greater awareness, horrific events like these shift immediate concerns to very basic human needs like health and safety for all members of the LGBTQ community.”

UVA police continue to investigate the attack, in which five men assaulted a UVA student and shouted anti-gay slurs at him. They ask anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers

I think gay people does have the right to say what they feel. But if someone asked me what I think about gay people, I am against it. Because if you have people going against it thaen something isn't right. Yeah, a lot of people go against anything of what someone else has to say. But I do not think it is right. You do not see to male lions going together because the lion know that its not right. How can you have a family with the same gender, cause you can't. People wake-up, see reality for what it is. I am not going around saying I hate guy people thats what they like. But I am not for it. God did not say adam and adam or eve and eve, cause it's wrong,HELLO. All I am saying there has to be something wrong with the picture if you have people protesting against it. For example: Two women raising a boy. Two of the same gender can't teach that boy how to be a man. In a family you need a woman and a man, so the child can get the tools that he need.

Christina Bell, you are a moron.
Billy April 17th, 2009 02:58pm
Christina Bell, why don't you google "gay animals?" You'll see there are hundreds of species that have same-sex coupling. It is in nature like it has always been in people. How could you not know such a fact? And I agree with Billy.
Scott April 17th, 2009 03:41pm
@ Christina Bell:

1.) You really must check your spelling and sentence structure.

2.) "But if someone asked me what I think about gay people, I am against it." Nobody asked you. Additionally, what the FUCK is "it?" Be a little bit more clear about your bigotry, is it employment rights, marriage rights, property rights, adoption rights? People who oppose homosexuality "in general" are just a bunch of retards who are unable who are unable to support their arguments with anything valid.

3.) "You do not see to male lions going together because the lion know that its not right." UHHHH...there have been numerous examples of animal species engaged in homosexual behavior OUTSIDE of captivity. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_animals_displaying_homosexual_behavior"

4.) "God did not say adam and adam or eve and eve, cause it's wrong,HELLO." Religion has been used to justify many moronic things, such as denying women the right to vote and slavery. What makes you absolutely certain that your interpretation is correct?

5.) "All I am saying there has to be something wrong with the picture if you have people protesting against it." Um...many gay rights supporters are protesting anti-gay laws and the politicians, so this does nothing to help your argument.

This is a fair way of expressing the need to include all gay and lesbian persons in the ongoing fight for true personal rights granted by our constitution.
Tom NUnnery April 17th, 2009 03:59pm
1. There are animals that engaged in same-sex activity. Google 'em.

2. My sister is lesbian and she is the mother of my wonderful niece. And she has a partner for more than 6 years. I think my sister's morals and beliefs are much better than yours, Christina.

3. According to the bible which I disavow it completely, it also said that you should be stoned to death for eating shrimp and for mixing cotton with polyester.

So your attempts to slam gays based on religion is silly. It simply reflects your limited knowledge of GLBT community at large.

Dearest Christina,

Your comments were inspiring, thought provoking, and very well articulated.

This is what sarcasm looks like.

Christina,
I believe your comments are driven from fear and not allowing yourself to be educated. We live in an educated and rich society that still allows minorities to be discriminated against simply because of views like yours. I can remember truckloads of blacks driving through my neighborhood in the 60s fighting for the same rights as whites, when interracial marriage was illegal. Now we have a president that is a beautiful cultural mixture of hope. It is my firm belief that God loves all his children and all mankind deserves to be treated equal without prejudice. To those 5 UVA students and I do believe you are UVA students that attacked those young men late at night. You are uneducated and fearful cowards. However, you taught the University something very important. The University of Virginia is the 1 ranked national public university. With that comes responsibility. They must do more to denounce violence against any member of the University based on sexual orientation or gender identity. It's a dark day for the University. I hope someone comes forward and turns those 5 criminals in. They are not what the University should be representing and no one should be protecting them.

Maybe God did create Adam and Eve, but he -also- created Steve for those nights when Eve had headaches - and the bitch had headaches every damn night.
Storm Christopher April 18th, 2009 05:34pm
LOL...Storm Christopher, u rock!

Christina, Christina, Christina....You certainly missed the point of this article: Hurting someone because they are gay is ILLEGAL. It's a HATE CRIME & it's a very, very ugly crime perpetrated by ugly, nasty, stupid (not ignorant) people who have nothing better to do than try to stick their nose in someone else's bedroom. What 2 consenting adults do in the privacy of their own bedroom is none of anybody else's business...PERIOD.

(BTW, I'm straight so don't even try that line of thinking. Some of the BEST people I've met are gay & some of the WORST people I've met proclaim they're Christian & straight.)
May April 20th, 2009 10:46am
Dude seriously, Lay off of her. Christina's opinion is her opinion so leaver her the Fuck alone and stop trying to harass people on the internet
Lilly April 21st, 2009 02:30pm
No one should pick on a person because they percieve them as gay, HOWEVER, if gays are making a pro gay statment it is not a HATE crime to disagree with them. There are lots of people who are happy to have gays living next door, HOWEVER if they want to make out in the front yard and my 6 year old asks me why two men are kissing I am going to tell him it is because they have some wires crossed in their heads, but it is ok, just like some people are bald, some people are super smart and some people need glasses.

My opinion is that since they cannot reproduce then they are are aberations of nature, but then again so is an albino tiger. They are natural but not "normal" in the context of nature. The same as a 4 leaf clover. They deserve the same respect as any other human being, HOWEVER, there are some gays who should consider toning it down a bit in order to make the lifestyle less offensive to everyday people. The same holds true for right wing christians, tree huggers, loudmouthed atheists, left wing nut jobs, etc.

Some flaming gays give all gays a bad name the same way Rush linbaugh makes all conservatives seem cold and pigheaded.

I am sure I will be attacked but don't worry I am sure it is not a hate crime to disagree with an employed white male.
ignor ramus April 23rd, 2009 10:01pm
I think christina is right!!! It says in the bible if a man lay down with another man it is a sin against God!!! I don't believe you should hurt someone because of the chooses they make but you can stand up for what is right even if you are persocuted!!! And don't try to tell me that the anti- gays are the only people who attack a side and get touchy and violent!!!every time in school you say I don't think gays and lesbiens are doing the right thing you have a mob that hates you and they can be more violent cause they have no morals what so ever!!! And the person that there are gay animals is so wrong and uneducated of coarse you can look it up on the Internet and find something do you believe everything you read because if you do your life will be a sad one!!!!! The only species that something like gays is frogs when there are no females in an area a frog will change it's sex!!!! And gays have killed more people than anyone they brought aids into America and gave blood which was put into dying babies and they suffered because of the gays sins!!!! No wonder our country is going under we have too many uneducated people who think they know what they are talking about go back to school and maybe learn this time for petes sake!!!!! It like people are so self center they worry about oh poor gays they don't have rights but there are people starving people under communist rule who have not one right and we worry way to much about ourselves!!!!! Get a life and do something with your life!!
