Trader Joe's applies for an ABC license for a site on 29N

Trader Joe’s fans, rejoice. The California-based grocery chain is coming to Charlottesville.

According to a public notice in today’s Daily Progress, the store is applying for a liquor license with the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control. The ABC has confirmed that the application was received on May 21 and is currently undergoing due process.

The store will be located on the stretch of land between Hydraulic Road and Greenbrier Drive.

Calls to Trader Joe's corporate offices, where it's still early morning, were not immediately returned.

@Jake: Great question! Based on the location of Albemarle Square, it does look like the Trader Joe's is part of the development. We are looking into it.

Great! I've been a fan since I lived in Pasadena in 1979. Now it will be just two blocks away...though I'd rather the property stay the way it is.

While you wait for TJ's to come to Albemarle Place, you can buy Trader Joe's items (over 80 of 'em) at Charlottesville's-own online grocery delivery service, RetailRelay.com. Check it out!

@Ms. Christian: For me, mainly price. They have "gourmet" and organic items for generally a much better price than comparable items elsewhere. And they have some good unique items too.

As for the location, I'm hoping they're going into Seminole Square, which I suspect would happen much sooner than Albemarle Place. The Short Pump location aside, I think they do tend to eschew fancy new developments in favor of lower rent locations.

T Joe's, according to my daughter, has all the amenities of Whole "Paycheck" & Harris Teeter minus the outrageous prices. I can't wait!!

Trader Joe's items are delivered right to my door cause I use RetailRelay's home delivery. (The company also delivers meals from Revolutionary Soup, TONS of local farm's organic goodies, The Cheese Shop items (of Stuart's Draft), fresh flowers from Hedge... and on & on). LOVE RetailRelay.com!!!
