Best Virginia Wine Luca Paschina is an old world guy making wine in the new world. The native Italian talks about things like making “age-worthy” red wines in Virginia, and when he says so, it ain’t just the wine talking. The Barboursville winemaker took home the overall Governor’s Cup in statewide wine competition last year with—practically unheard of around here—a 9-year-old vintage, his 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve. With that single victory, Paschina begins to make the point that Virginia wine can stand the test of time. That must be why you voted Barboursville best. Either that, or you’re faithfully reading C-VILLE’s Working Pour column. And, if the latter is the case, then you know how much we admire Virginia Tech-trained Veritas winemaker Emily Pelton, who took home a National Women’s Wine award last year. How lovely that you admire her good work, too. Cheers, y’all!
