State police involved in search for missing VT student

More than 100 days after 20-year-old Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington was spotted on the Copeley Road Bridge, leaving a Metallica concert at John Paul Jones Arena, her remains were found in a 750-acre farm roughly 10 miles away. Since the discovery of Harrington’s body, Virginia State Police and local law enforcement have pursued new leads in a case that primary investigator Lieutenant Joe Rader said VSP considers a “potential homicide.”

C-VILLE Weekly also pursued new information, from interviews with residents of the areas surrounding Anchorage Farm, where Harrington’s body was found, to a tip on 15th Street, where local residents reported being interviewed by investigators who might’ve located Harrington’s shirt. As the discovery of Morgan Harrington’s remains turns to new searches for answers, here is a comprehensive report of the events so far.

"Very atypical," and a last sighting

On October 17, 2009 Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington went missing outside the John Paul Jones Arena after leaving a Metallica concert. Harrington had traveled with friends to Charlottesville from James Madison University, in Harrisonburg, to attend the concert.

The following day, Dan Harrington, Morgan’s father, filed a missing person report after his daughter failed to come home, which he called “very atypical.” According to police statements, Harrington ended up outside of the arena after leaving her friends to visit the restroom.

Harrington was denied re-entry to the concert, a policy regularly adopted by other ACC venues. After being criticized by some for Harrington’s disappearance, the University of Virginia released a statement on October 23, explaining that re-entry typically requires management approval. The policy, according to UVA, aids in crowd control and the prevention of contraband.

Although widely suspected, it took Virginia State Police two months to announce that Harrington was drinking and not acting normally on the evening when she was last seen.

According to a timeline constructed from tips the police received, eyewitnesses place the missing woman outside of the arena conversing and interacting with people before Metallica took the stage. At 8:48pm, Harrington had a phone conversation with a friend inside the arena. Harrington told the friend she would find a ride home from friends in Charlottesville.

Between 9pm and 9:10pm, police say someone matching Harrington’s description was seen walking through the University Hall parking lot, in front of the arena. Shortly afterwards, Harrington was seen at Lannigan Field, close to the UVA track, where her purse and cell phone were later found in the grassy area of the parking lot. According to police, Harrington was last seen hitchhiking for a ride on the Copeley Road Bridge.

In response to rumors that members of the UVA basketball team were somehow involved in the case, UVA spokesperson Carol Wood said in a November 24 statement that players were approached after practice by a female matching Harrington’s description the night she disappeared. “They cooperated fully with law enforcement investigators and, like other witnesses interviewed by the police, they provided information that is important to police efforts to establish Ms. Harrington’s movements,” said Wood.

In November, Harrington’s parents, along with the Laura Recovery Center, a Texas-based group, organized a massive search effort. Over three days, a total of 1,667 registered volunteers combed through nearly 2,600 acres of local land. Ultimately, however, the search didn’t recover any relevant evidence.

"Not a public place at all"

Dan Harrington believed that his daughter would be found within five miles of the Copeley Road Bridge, where she was last seen alive. In fact, Morgan Harrington was found a little more than 10 miles from the bridge, on a remote portion of David Bass’ 750-acre Anchorage Farm.

Morgan Harrington disappeared more than three months ago while attending a Metallica concert at John Paul Jones Arena.

On Tuesday, January 23, Bass fed his cows and began to check his fences for damages from wind and rain two days earlier. Around 8:30am, Bass spotted what he thought was a dead deer.

“’Til I got close,” he told reporters on Tuesday. “And realized that I was looking at a human skull. And that’s when I called 9-1-1.” Bass said that there was some clothing near the remains, and added, “I would not have guessed the sex of the victim myself…it’s very decomposed.”

Bass, who has owned the property since 1985 according to county records, says his visits to that portion of his land are infrequent—“It’s not a public place at all.” Asked if he dealt with trespassing problems, he replied, “No. We get hunters, we get people that hunt without permission. But every farm has that. We’ve had no problem here at all.”

Reports of violence in a secluded area

Bass told reporters that Harrington’s remains were located within 1.5 miles from the entrance to his home. The Anchorage Farm property is partially bordered by a few other roads—Monacan Trail Road in front, roughly two miles of Red Hill Road, and less than three miles of residential roads within neighboring Blandemar Farm and Blandemar Farm Estates.

According to CrimeReports.com—a web site that maps crime data, linked from the Albemarle County Police Department’s web-site—there were two separate assault incidents reported in the month before Harrington’s discovery. The first, dated December 26, 2009, is listed at the 1800 block of Red Hill Road—less than 2 miles from the entrance to Bass’ property. The most recent occurred on January 6, in the 4900 block of Monacan Trail Road, less than 7 miles from the Anchorage Farm entrance. A call to Albemarle Police about those incidents was not returned by press time.

The front entrance to Anchorage Farm, which David Bass estimates is one-and-a-half miles from where Harrington’s remains were discovered. He said that there is no public road within a mile of where he found her, and added, “I’m completely baffled.”

The Virginia State Police’s Sex Offender Registry lists six registered offenders in the 22959 North Garden zip code that includes Anchorage Farm. One offender, listed with two convictions in Albemarle Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court for rape and one for sexual battery in Charlottesville Circuit Court between 2006 and 2008, lives within two miles of Anchorage Farm.

John Ekman, who manages a gas station south of Anchorage Farm, knows David Bass and refers to the Bass family as “nice people.” Asked whether drivers along Red Hill Road could access Anchorage Farm easily, Ekman replied that he doubted it. “Not many places for people to pull over,” he explained.

Many of the homes in neighboring Blandemar Farm Estates sit on lots of 21 acres or more. According to one resident, the majority of Blandemar’s population is either retired or “semi-retired,” with grown children. Several residents claimed they were  unaware of any trouble with trespassing in the area.

“It is secluded, and the lots are expansive,” said one resident. “People live out here because they like their privacy.”

The same resident said that a few bowhunters control the deer population in the community, but “they will always let us know when they are on our property.”

“The grass probably would’ve been at least two feet, maybe three feet tall, at the time of this tragedy,” said a resident about their property. “Anyone going through that field by foot or by car, I would’ve seen the tracks…[A]nd I saw no tracks.”

The resident also detailed the division between Anchorage Farm and their property in Blandemar: a half-mile that includes a ridge (“very steep”), a creek, woods and several rows of barbed wire fencing. “Not that it couldn’t be done. It could be done, but with great difficulty. At night, I’d say pretty much impossible.”

Colonel Steve Flaherty of the Virginia State Police told a crowd last Tuesday that “significant items and evidence” were found with Harrington’s remains on Anchorage Farm.

"Most likely it will be a homicide"

Roughly seven hours after Bass found the remains on his property, Virginia State Police discussed last Tuesday morning’s discovery. “Based on the evidence there that was recovered, we are fairly confident at this time that the remains are those of Morgan Dana Harrington,” said Colonel Steve Flaherty, superintendent of VSP. The remains were transported to the office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond.

According to Flaherty, “significant items and evidence” were found near the remains. As his comments joined the rumors spreading through the community that the remains were those of Harrington, Flaherty explained that state police “cannot release the evidence that leads us to this conclusion at this particular time.”

Lieutenant Joe Rader, the primary investigator on the Morgan Harrington case, said that while the investigation had been a missing person case, “we have always seen it as potentially a homicide.”

“We still proceed as if it is a homicide, and most likely it will be a homicide.”

"This is known to someone here"

By the next day, dental records had positively identified the remains as those of Morgan Harrington. During a 1pm press conference at the Copeley Road Bridge, Dan Harrington told reporters: “Even though Morgan has been found, she’s been murdered.” At that time, a cause of death had not been determined.

“This is known to someone here…,” he said, speaking about the location where the remains were found. “And as I’ve said all along, Morgan would be found within five miles of this bridge, and it was probably a local person. And I’m sure I’m 100 percent right.”

Dan Harrington was joined by his wife, Gil, and their son, Alex. Gil Harrington said: “We are very happy to know that Morgan very likely, as Dan has said, did not live through the time of the concert. She was a long time in that field. I am happy that she was not alive long, enduring unspeakable things.” No further details were given to clarify Gil Harrington’s statements.

A new lead on 15th Street?

On Friday afternoon, January 29, several residents of 15th Street, just over a mile from Copeley Road Bridge, reported they were interviewed by investigators who canvassed the area in connection with Harrington’s death.

David Bass (right), who found Harrington’s remains in a “remote area” of his Anchorage Farm, described the surrounding area as a “[v]ery nice area to live.”

“About 11:30am, I got a knock on my back door. I opened it up and it’s a guy who flashes a badge and says he’s a detective,” said one resident, who asked to remain anonymous due to privacy concerns. “He just told me that they were canvassing my building, because they had found what they thought was Morgan Harrington’s shirt somewhere in the bushes in front of the building.” Harrington was wearing a black Pantera t-shirt the night she disappeared.

The resident said the investigator, not in uniform, asked whether the resident remembered anything suspicious from the night Harrington disappeared, or since, and recommended that the resident call Albemarle County Police Department’s Crime Stoppers line [434-977-4000] if anything occurred. He did not leave a business card, but reportedly flashed a badge.

A second resident said that two days earlier, “I was going to my car, and there was a woman who was kind of digging in the bush, and there were two guys walking around the apartment across the street. I heard the one guy [say] they hadn’t found anything, so the one guy was like ‘Well, we found her shirt over here.’” A third resident confirmed the reports; both remained anonymous due to privacy concerns.

Virginia State Police spokesperson Corinne Geller said she didn’t know whether there was a law enforcement presence on 15th Street. “We’ve gotten a lot of tips and a lot of different leads related to the case. They may’ve been just following up on a tip almost in a process of elimination versus it being some critical aspect of an investigation.”

After Morgan’s remains were positively identified, Dan Harrington (center), with his son, Alex (left), and his wife, Gil, told reporters that “it was probably a local person.” The family has not yet shared plans for a memorial service.

What comes next?

On Friday evening, January 29, members and friends of the Harrington family gathered in Roanoke for a candlelight vigil. The same day, Gil and Dan Harrington told the Associated Press that the site where their daughter’s remains were found held “a wealth of physical evidence,” which echoes the “significant items and evidence” that Virginia State Police Colonel Flaherty reported during the January 23 press conference.

According to Dan Harrington, there are no immediate memorial plans. “We just found out from police that, although they have positively identified Morgan’s body this morning, that the medical examiner will not release her body probably for another five or six days,” said Harrington last Wednesday.

The day that Harrington’s remains were found, an Albemarle High School student created a Facebook group called “R.I.P. Morgan Harrington.” The group currently has more than 10,000 members, and comments appear on the page nearly every hour. Many offer condolences to the Harrington family; one reads, simply, “Justice for Morgan.”—Brendan Fitzgerald and Chiara Canzi

This is the best article I've seen on the case so far, great job! There are lots of predators in the greater Charlottesville area, and many more within an easy driving distance, even more who haven't been caught yet and are unknown to the community. I wouldn't try to pin it on any particular person without more evidence. I haven't heard of anyone actually seeing the abduction or who was responsible. Maybe someone knows, but if they've shared it with police, it wasn't enough evidence to make an arrest so far. I'd be interested to hear the medical examiner's report. Maybe they found something interesting that will trip somebody's memory.

I would bet money in Vegas some redneck local who drinks too much bud and beats his wife probably did it. He probably was an opportunist who found a victim at the right place and time. They will catch his dumb white, early 30's ass. There is a lot of violence that goes on in those backwoods areas that are never talked about.

Correction: Keighley Alyea was found in a farm field in Cass County, Missouri, not Kansas. The travel distance by car would have been 18 hours, not 15 hours. I still believe more than one person was involved unless she walked on her own to the destination.
BrianFebruary 2nd 01:45pm
Distance and familiarity with the local area need not be factors regarding what happened. There was once a serial killer living in Niagara Falls who worked at a tire shop. He used his time off on weekends to travel as far South as Florida to kill women. He killed women in Virginia, Georgia, and Florida. Here's the link: www.niagarafallsreporter.com/serialkiller.html Regardless, Morgan's story is just as sad as those of Keighley Alyea's and many others who have died at the hands of an animal without a soul.

Um excuse me Starr, but why did you have to throw "white" in there? I mean wtf? How the hell do you know what color the perp, if there even is a perp, is?????? For all we know this could be an asian guy or an Arab or any other ethnicity. And on a Saturday night in backwoods Virginia, most "dumb white 30 something redneck" is having a beer at the local watering hole or watching football in his trailer. Odds are this girl was picked up by a highly intelligent person who knew exactly what they were doing and where they were going.

Amen to Starr and Steve: Hit the nail on the head. R.I.P Morgan, God rest her soul, and I pray every day for God to give strength to Morgan's family, dog, and her best friends. I have 100% faith that VSP and LE will find and prosecute the Perp; and I agree that he has escalated, and will strike again. It is only a matter of time, in either case.

After reviewing the information we have so far there is no conclusion to be made of how she died. It looks like a homicide, but the medical examiner has not provided the cause of death. I think that she was killed by whomever stalked her at the concert. If you go back to the witness reports outside the arena there are several important things that stand out. She left the concert, was denied re-entry, was seen trying to "pretend" she was with a male by embracing his arm and walking with him, talked to a group of men, and was roaming the parking lot eventually looking for a way home. Taking into account her reported state of mind (from witnesses and friends) and vulnerabilities, it is likely that her interactions with people outside of the arena were attempts to get away from someone. That someone likely was involved in getting her in an intoxicated or drugged state. I agree that this person was local. Also, the person was probably on a security camera. Where the body was found is extremely important to solving this case. If I was to go on hypothetical situation it was probably where she ran. She layed down in the high grass and expired right there. If that were the case then the place where she was likely assualted is close by.. within at least 1 mile. It's not uncommon for a person to succemb to hypothermia or have a heart attack under such stressful and intoxicated circumstances. If this was the case then we know that she fought and escaped her attackers. She was a very brave young lady and didn't derserve to die.

Whoever did this needs to be brought to justice! What a horrible thing to do to someone! I went to middle school with this girl and she was a good person! My thoughts and prayers go out to her family and friends! This is such a tragedy!
ammFebruary 2nd 01:10am
At first I thought that David Bass looked a little suspicious as well, but now that I'm reading that there are 6 sex offenders in the area she was found, I think it's possible that she may have tried to escape from someone in that area whether it be the a sex offender or not, and something had already happened to her (wounded, hurt, drugs etc) that would cause her to later expire in the field. I think Morgan came to the field herself.
EmilyFebruary 2nd 09:54am
It struck me for the first time that Morgan was seen after the location where her purse and phone were found. It may be that she lost her purse and phone and then being without a way to contact family and friends, decided to hitchhike. Of course she then become known to anyone who saw her as being alone and without any other source of help and therefore, prey to men with bad motives. Also, any die hard Metallica fans would be in the concert, not out on the street, which further reinforces the idea that it was a local, not someone there for the concert. I have also thought that in order to abduct Morgan more than one person would have to involved. She was not a small girl and apparently would have fought to the death. Or could it be that she was intoxicated, taken advantage of and then dumped in the field where she died of shock and exposure in the cold? However, I think it more likely she was already dead when taken there.

THIS HAS GOT TO BE THE GUY!!!! HOW STRANGE IT MUST BE FOR YOU TO BE READING BLOGS COVERING THE DISAPPEARANCE AND DEATH OF THIS SWEET GIRL THAT WAS NICE ENOUGH TO ACKNOWLEDGE YOU WHEN YOU SAID HI TO HER. THERE WAS A TIME IN THE DISTANT PAST WHEN CASES COULD FADE FROM THE MEDIA SPOTLIGHT AND THE PUBLIC WOULD FORGET THE HORRORS ONCE SO FRESH IN THEIR MINDS. YOU SEE NOW FOR YOU THE SITUATION IS VERY DIFFERENT. THIS CASE WILL NOT FADE SO QUICKLY FROM VIEW. ALL OF THE PEOPLE THAT RALLIED TO FIND MORGAN ARE DETERMINED TO SEE THIS THROUGH UNTIL YOU ARE ARRESTED (OR DIE WHEN THEY COME TO GET YOU). THE MAJORITY OF HOMICIDE CASES IN THE UNITED STATES LEAD TO SUCCESSFUL PROSECUTION. IT IS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE YOU ARE ARRESTED. IF YOU HAVE A STORY TO TELL THAT MIGHT HELP CONVINCE THE PUBLIC THAT YOU AREN'T A MONSTER NOW WOULD BE THE TIME TO SHARE IT WITH US. IF YOU FEEL AS THOUGH THERE ARE TIMES WHEN YOU CAN NOT CONTROL YOUR AGGRESSION THEN YOU ARE RATIONAL AND SANE ENOUGH TO UNDERSTAND THAT YOU HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY TO OTHERS TO MAKE SURE THAT NOTHING OF THIS SORT EVER HAPPENS AGAIN. IF THERE IS THE TINIEST BIT OF DECENCY LEFT IN YOU REALIZE THAT NOW IS THE TIME TO TURN YOURSELF IN. IF IT'S ANY HELP MAYBE YOU HAVE A FRIEND THAT COULD GO WITH YOU TO THE STATION. WATCH THE NEWS. LOOK AT THE SHATTERED SOULS THAT WERE ONCE LOVING, HAPPY PARENTS. LOOK AT MORGAN'S BROTHER STRUGGLING AGAINST THE GREATEST LOSS HE MAY EVER KNOW. AFTER THE EVENT, ONCE YOUR MAD, IMPULSIVE NATURE BEGAN TO SUBSIDE I KNOW YOU FELT REGRET, SORROW. IT WASN'T LIKE THE OTHER TIMES WAS IT!??? EVERYTHING CHANGES WHEN YOU TAKE A HUMAN LIFE. YOU HAVE LOST CONTROL. HOW CAN YOU LOOK AT THE DAMAGE YOU HAVE DONE WITHOUT REALIZING HOW MANY FINE, INNOCENT LIVES YOU HAVE RUINED? THERE WILL BE NO HAPPINESS FOR YOU WITHOUT REDEMPTION. NO PEACE FOR YOU WITHOUT CONFESSING BEFORE GOD AND MAN, NO REST FOR YOU EVER AS YOU LOOK OVER YOUR SHOULDER CONSTANTLY, MISTRUSTING EVERYONE. ON THE OUTSIDE YOU ARE NOT RECEIVING HELP CONTROLLING YOURSELF. YOU ARE CAUGHT IN THE MIDDLE BETWEEN FEAR OF BEING IN AN INSTITUTION VERSUS FEAR OF GOING MAD AGAIN. BY THINKING THIS WAY YOU ARE ONLY CONSIDERING YOURSELF. YOU MAY HAVE CONSIDERED RUNNING BUT THAT WON'T WORK. IF YOU BY SOME MIRACLE OF THE DEVIL ESCAPED YOUR FREEDOM WOULD BE SHORT-LIVED AS THE IMAGES AND NEWS OF THE CASE ARE BEING CARRIED BY ALL MEDIA GLOBALLY. MOST IMPORTANTLY YOU CAN'T RUN FROM YOURSELF. THE PAIN, RAGE AND FEAR ARE INSIDE OF YOU. THE SAFEST PLACE FOR YOU, AT LEAST FOR THE TIME BEING IS A MENTAL HOSPITAL. TURN YOURSELF IN BEFORE SOMEONE ELSE GETS HuRT. THIS BRIEF SPACE OF TIME BEFORE THE CORONOR'S REPORT IS RELEASED MAY BE YOUR LAST CHANCE. WE WILL NOT GIVE UP EVER! This is a letter written directly to the rapist.
STEVEFebruary 2nd 07:16am
I still can't understand all the confusion/misinformation. I certainly hope LE has followed up on every credible lead and they are able to make an arrest with enough evidence to nail the perp. God bless the Harringtons.
JaneFebruary 2nd 08:04am
If this was a homocide, I believe more than one individual may have been involved. Local residents describe the terrain as being difficult to traverse. If it were someone acting alone, there are many other inconspicuous locations in the area with easier access requiring much less time and effort. I wonder if there is any connection to the Keighley Ann Alyea murder. Keighley was murdered in early October 2009 by three young males. I can't call them men after brutally murdering a young woman. Keighley's remains were also found in a farm field in Overland Park, KS. Did these three attend the Metallica Concert in Charlottesville because Metallica didn't play in Kansas, a 15 hour road trip away? Is there a subtle resemblance between Morgan and Keighley? See Google images for Keighley Ann Alyea. Morgan was seen walking with three young males in the parking lot according to witnesses. Could these be the same three? Could these be the same individuals seen at Boyd Tavern who asked for directions because they were unfamiliar with the area (out-of-towners)? Or, did the killer choose the location of a farm field based on being familiar with Keighley's murder a little over a week earlier?
BrianFebruary 2nd 09:13am
Observer: Huh? You hitchhike because you lost your phone and couldn't call your friends? If you lost your cell phone and wanted to get in touch with your friends, wouldn't you just ask someone else to use their phone? (How did we ever survive without cell phones, when we might have to ask to use the phone in the Dragon Lady restaurant or find a pay phone ....) And besides, wouldn't you wait for your friends to get out of the concert? And why would you leave your own car at JPJ anyway? Something doesn't add up. This girl was partying, smoking & drinking, hooking up, having a lot of risky fun. Her friends weren't worried because she told them she was fine, having fun, catch you in the morning, "don't do anything I wouldn't do," girls gone wild stuff. She was young and invincible. I'm sure the police have checked her Facebook and IM -- was there someone who was planning to meet her at the concert? Did she have a planned "hook up" with, say, a death-core rapper from California?
Huh?February 2nd 03:31pm
yes, the laws protect the wicked. the same people who spread the black plague in europe claim to be the oppressed poor ghetto dwellers, many times more wealthy then the real peasants, aided the english tories to quelch george washington and his americans, caused the panic of 1873 to destroy the republican party, caused segregation in america, murdered the royal line of ruissia, enslaved the chinese to heroin and heavy homage paid to england and france, and engaged in two wars with them, instigated wwI wwII, brought the credit crunch of 2008 and whom are holding all the keys to the american and world wealth and whom can start a war with china any time. they're the ones whom fostering a world were evil is championed. jews.

Looking at the map they have above, her remains were JUST BARELY on that farm, very close to the property line. I'd be more interested in who had access to the neighboring property, because it looks like she was probably brought in from there. I have to wonder if the killer knew the owner of the neighboring property and was trying to avoid incriminating him/her?
Looking At It AgainFebruary 2nd 03:34pm
i had a feeling it was on the boarder. they know it's someone who knew the land. perhaps a farm hand whom worked on a neighboring farm. yeah, like 5 guys. they knew the area. the police know this.

Did you not notice where it says access from the other farm is separated by "a half-mile that includes a ridge (“very steep”), a creek, woods and several rows of barbed wire fencing. " I understand from another article that Mr. Bass' daughter lives in the other house on the property. Is she a party girl? Have parties? I can't see any other way Morgan got on to that farm other than by somebody that was already heading in the direction of that property.

This marks the very first time the C-Ville weekly has dared to mention UVA students in the same article as Morgan Harrington. Yet they STILL will not dare mention the newspaper delivery gal who spotted her on the west range of the lawn very late the night she vanished emerging from a room there with three men. This was covered in the Hook story months ago. The UVA brass cast a BIG shadow over this community - and it's obvious how scared and/or in cahoots C-Ville weekly is of/with them. So much so, that they will suppress info even in a missing person's case so long as the the reputations of UVA students are kept from the slightest harm or suggestion. Just imagine if a Pantera shirt had been found at, say, Hardy Drive.. But this is 15th. street - and we all know who lives there. You can bet the UVA brass is very busy right now making sure this new story dies fast. They will thwart a murder investigation with just as much vigor as they did a missing person's investigation, and rape cases. http://www.uvavictimsofrape.com/

Huh?: "You hitchhike because you lost your phone and couldn't call your friends? If you lost your cell phone and wanted to get in touch with your friends, wouldn't you just ask someone else to use their phone?" Because most people have numbers stored in their phones (not in an address book) and most people don't remember numbers because they don't dial them anymore, but simply find the name on the list of contacts they don't remember the number. How can you then call from another phone if you don't remember the number? "And besides, wouldn't you wait for your friends to get out of the concert?" How do you find your friends in such a huge crowd and without being able to arrange a meet up place, having lost your phone? (Of course she could have arranged this before losing the phone, if she did in fact lose the phone). "And why would you leave your own car at JPJ anyway? Something doesn't add up." I agree. Mine is just one of the many theories people are coming up with to try to explain what happened.

After seeing her picture on a missing persons website, I immediately got these images of: A tan skinned man, in his late 20's - early 30's. He was tall but chubby, dressed in all black, with shoulder length, sloppy, curly black hair and oily skin. He overheard her name and some of her friends name's, from a conversation she had earlier in the evening. I am getting more visions about that night and I will post them later. I hope that my "intuitions", could help catch this preditor

Local women of all ages must be aware that there have been 5-6 unsolved murders of women in Central Virginia in the last 10-12 years, probably by a local. Just because time passes (and people forget) does not mean the earlier cases should be ignored. Same person? Possible. I, in my 50s, was stalked in a downtown hotel by a man who first approached me in the parking lot and later jumped on an elevator with me during the day...got off the floor above me and came down the stairwell only to run into my husband and me. We called in the police. They said he fit the description of someone they'd been looking for for a year. About 38, brown hair, sweat shirt, and horrible teeth. The point is -- especially for young women in C'ville -- is that a sexually stimulated and/or perverted male will go after anyone. University towns attract such males due to the abundance of young women. Do your business -- banking, gassing up,etc. during the day light, ladies. Do NOT hike in Shenandoah National Park except in groups. Pairs may not even be safe. Avoid getting inebriated and letting down your guard. Dress nicely yet, but modestly. Men turned on by porn -- and it's all over the web -- may see too much flesh as an invitation. Do not be naive and consider yourselves to be invincible as many young people do. Morgan Harrington engaged in some foolish behaviors.

It's very sad what happened to Morgan. It is dangerous for a woman to walk alone when it's dark and to hitchhike, especially if she is young and attractive. She should have called her parents or someone to pick her up, and if it was too far or nobody could pick her up, she would have called a taxi. And if she didn't have enough money, her parents could have paid it when she got home. It is dangerous to walk alone and to hitchhike. Everywhere in this world there are sick people who do horrible things to other people. I hope the police find whoever committed this horrible crime.

The lack of new information on this case is very unsettling..It is important, the medical examiner release the COD or this case will grow cold and the perp will not be caught..

I think the police need to push for more leads. How can someone "disappear" in such a populated area? People tend to get quiet and forget in situations like these. Maybe they are scared of being suspected themselves or scared of retaliation of others, etc.. But solving this murder must be the number one goal!!! Time is of the upmost importance in order to find her killer. Teenagers are scared to provide information to police because of publicity and especially if they were involved in any illegal activities. Please people talk, you owe it to Morgan. If I knew something I would tell.

condolences to the harringtons, esp to her brother alex, who still has his life and career yet to begin..my own son would be devastated if this had happened to my daughter..please pray esp for Alex..he looks terrible, please pray for him to have some kind of peace.(i know her parents are also grieving, but it seems that they have found peace since her remains have been disovered, but i am not as sure about her brother, alex))..Here goes my opinion: i would ask all parents of college-age women this question: how many of your daughter's roommates or pals would use her car to drive to a concert, many miles from their dorm, yet go home to that same dorm, in your daughter's car, but not with your daughter?? do any of our daughters have friends like these??? read what Gil,Morgan's mom, said in one of her posts on findmorgan.com.it went something like this: "Morgan's friends share the air with us"... In other words, they have sat with them, been in the same room with them, but no words are spoken..huh? if this were my daughter, i could not, and would not ,sit silently in a room with my daughter's "Friends" and not make them talk to me!how can they look dan and gil in the eye, and pretend they(the friends) have "no idea" what happened to Morgan after she left the arena.if this had been my daughter, and these friends refused to talk to the police on her behalf,i would be camped out on all of their doorsteps(or dorm steps),and make them trip over me daily, until one of them finally broke down and told me what happened, and ALL of what happened, on 10/17/2009.please pray for the weakest link among her friends..that is the person who will finally crack and talk to the police..a troubled conscience is a powerful thing...i am not sayng that her friends directly or purposely did something to Morgan..but i am saying that they know when she REALLY left them, why she REALLY left them, who she was with, and where she went(including the hours before the concert..they got there in the afternoon, hours before it started,so where did they go in those hours? a house party? a local bar?did somebody follow them? stalk them?)..but these "friends" arre too busy protecting their own A**es to help the police in any way..like i said to all of you parents,do your daughters have any friends like these?i think not..here is the other thing: third year education students(such as Morgan)are not flighty,risk-taking airheads..she worked with some of the most at-risk children in our society..those who have seen domestic violence in their own homes..does this sound like a boozer/hitchhiker/party girl/airhead to you? how would she ever be hired by any school or district, with a dui or drug offense,or even 1 arrest? the answer: she would not.yes, even "good girls" can slip, and even her dad, Dan,said she was not perfect, but that also does not mean she brought her own death on due to her so-called "risky behavior".please pray for that "weakest link" to finally come forward...Kathleen Flynn

Does anyone know when the ME is going to release the cause of death?
KELLYFebruary 17th 07:42pm
I just think this whole thing is bizarre-from her going to a concert in HER car, leaving the arena, losing her purse, cellphone to hitchhiking in a strange city, ending up dead on a 750 acre farm, to her mother's description of her eyes and bones,to her memorial service with her stiletto heels, blow dryer, passports and bracelets on a table!!! I mean no disrespect to anyone, esp her family! It just very bizarre!!
KellyFebruary 17th 08:02pm
I blame this in part to her friends. WHY WOULD you let your “intoxicated” friend outside the arena having the keys to HER car???? Why???? I just don’t understand!!! ????????????

The whole story is bizarre. The VA tech killings are bizarre. There may be some international organized criminals who are trying to use this as a way to steal our civil rights. Read Title 18 USC 241: Conspiracy against Civil Rights. How would you convince Americans to give up their civil liberties? Answer: By making them think it will bring safety for them and their children.

IT IS NOW THE END OF MARCH 2010 & POSTS HAVE DWINDLED! I found VERY interesting the last word used by 'Steve' on his Feb. 2, 7:16 AM post above. He ended with the statement "This is a letter to the 'rapist'." I lived in Harrisonburg when Alissa Showalter,a H'burg native, disappeared & when her remains were found & when the Shenandoah National Park murders took place. I have 2 daughters who live in the Shenandoah Valley. Morgan's story has held my heart&I have read all I can find re. her dis- appearance. Gut instinct is that the park murders, Alissa's murder, & Morgan's murder are acts of the same serial killer.Alisa was on Route 29,driving to Charlottesville, Mor gan was abducted from C'ville & the Shen. Nat'l. Park is in very close prox imity to C'ville. Too much in common with the 3 to be coincidence. My point is: Have I missed something somewhere? Even now,in March, has Medical Examiner, ever released how Morgan was murdered? Did a perp "slip up"? What does Steve know about a "rapist"?

Morgan Dana Harrington's killer is probably doing something legal for a living, but being paid under the table. Maybe he's a landscaper or a painter. Just a guess=

If the Harrington's want to solve this case, they need to permit inmates to post their opinions about cases. Do any prosecutors allow this in Virginia?
